What Does It Mean to Have a High Blood Sugar Level?

You may have heard that people with diabetes have "high blood sugar." But what does that mean exactly?

High blood sugar, or hyperglycemia, is the presence of too much glucose in the blood.

Blood sugar is a type of sugar that is absorbed by the cells in the body and used for energy.

Glucose is the main source of energy for the body and is transported to cells by the blood.

Higher levels of glucose in the blood can indicate a problem with your glucose metabolism, which can lead to a number of health problems.

When high blood sugar is left untreated, it can lead to diabetes or even heart disease.

According to Harvard's report, a normal blood sugar level is below 100 mg/dL after an 8-hour fast. Diabetics have a blood sugar level above 126 mg/dL.

If you're concerned about your blood sugar levels, don't hesitate to seek medical advice.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that occurs when your body does not produce enough insulin or cannot use the insulin properly, causing your sugar levels in the blood to rise significantly above the normal range.

Insulin is a hormone produced by beta cells in the pancreas that helps regulate blood sugar levels.

When diabetes develops, the body’s ability to make or respond to insulin becomes impaired.

This can lead to high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) and other health problems.

What Are the Causes of High Blood Sugar?

There are many potential causes of high blood sugar. In general, high blood sugar can be caused by eating too many carbohydrates (too much sugar) or not getting enough exercise. Let's see how:

  1. Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are foods that are turned into sugar in your body.

  2. Foods such as bread, potatoes, pasta, and rice are all examples of carbohydrates.

  3. The amount of carbohydrates each person should eat varies depending on their size and activity level.

  4. If they eat too many carbohydrates, they may experience a rise in their blood glucose levels after eating.

  5. This is so because there is a certain hormone called insulin that is produced in the pancreas that helps to move sugar from the blood into muscle, fat, and liver cells where it is stored as fuel.

  6. Therefore, when you have too much sugar in your blood and the amount of insulin can not help you move that excessive amount of sugar into your cells, you have high blood sugar.

  7. Exercise: Exercise helps lower blood glucose levels because it helps the cells in your body use insulin more efficiently.

  8. If you do not get enough exercise, you may be more likely to have high blood glucose levels after eating.

  9. It is recommended that each person get at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week for optimal health.

Causes of High Blood Sugar in Women With Type 2 Diabetes

The two major types of diabetes are type 1 and type 2. Both types involve abnormal glucose levels in the blood.

In people with type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks the beta cells in the pancreas, causing them to stop producing insulin.

In people with type 2 diabetes, the body doesn't use insulin properly, resulting in high blood sugar levels.

Other factors may contribute to the onset of type 2 diabetes, including obesity, physical inactivity, diet, race or ethnicity, age, family history, and genetics.

Here Are the Symptoms of High Blood Sugar in Women

When you have high blood sugar, you may experience some or all of these symptoms. Learn about them here!

1. Increases Yeast Infections of the Vaginal and Oral Cavities, as Well as Vaginal Thrush

Blood sugar problems are not just annoying; they can also be dangerous.

This is because high blood sugar levels can lead to the overgrowth of yeast, which can cause infections in various parts of a woman's body.

symptoms of high blood sugar in women include yeast infections

One of the most common places where yeast overgrowth is observed is in the vagina and oral cavity, where it causes vaginal thrush and oral candidiasis.

While vaginal thrush is generally easy to treat, oral candidiasis can be more complicated and require some medications.

If you are experiencing an increase in yeast infections, vaginal discharge, or pain when going to the bathroom, it is worth seeing a doctor.

2. Sexual Dysfunction in Women

Sexual dysfunction refers to a problem occurring during any phase of the sexual response cycle that prevents the individual or couple from experiencing satisfaction from sexual activity.

The sexual response cycle traditionally includes excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution.

Desire and arousal are both parts of the excitement phase of the sexual response.

Women with high blood sugar levels may experience lower sexual function later in life.

It has been scientifically argued that high levels of glucose in women can lead to lower sexual desire and difficulty becoming aroused.

3. Frequent Urination

High blood sugar levels in women can cause frequent urination in women since the kidneys are unable to retain all the excess glucose.

When this happens, the kidneys must work harder than normal to filter and absorb the excess glucose.

As a result, more glucose is left in the urine, which is then excreted along with water.

Since there is more water in the urine, women will urinate more often.

This leads to frequent urination and a loss of water from the body, which leads to dehydration.

Because of this increased need to urinate, diabetics often have to get up several times during the night to go to the bathroom.

This sleep disturbance can lead to daytime fatigue and irritability.

Other problems associated with frequent nighttime urination include bedwetting among children and interrupted sleep among adults.

4. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (Pcos)

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine system disorder among women of reproductive age.

High sugar levels in women can cause polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

PCOS is also associated with obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease.

Women with PCOS often have irregular menstrual periods or excess male hormone (androgen) levels.

The ovaries may fail to regularly release eggs (ovulate). As a result, the follicles may develop into small cysts.

In women with PCOS, the cells do not respond normally to insulin. This is known as insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance prevents the body from using insulin properly.

As a result, the body needs more insulin to help glucose enter cells.

The symptoms may include irregular or no menstruation, excess hair growth, acne, pelvic pain, difficulty getting pregnant, and patches of thick, darker, and velvety skin.

Complications may include type 2 diabetes, obesity, obstructive sleep apnea, heart disease, mood disorders, and endometrial cancer.

5. Infections of the Urinary Tract

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are very common in women.

About one-third of all women will have at least one UTI in their lifetime, and most will have several.

High sugar levels in women can cause infections of the urinary tract. It is said that sugar can cause urinary tract inflammation, which is why it’s so bad for your health as a woman.

symptoms of high blood sugar in women include increased UTI

Therefore, inflammation can damage tissues, including those of the urinary tract, and increase your susceptibility to infection.

In addition, when you consume a lot of sugar, this can change the pH balance in your urine, making you more vulnerable to infections.

Women with this infection will usually experience the following symptoms: A feeling of needing to urinate often but only passing small amounts of urine; burning or pain when urinating; pressure or cramping in the lower abdomen; and cloudy, foul-smelling, or bloody urine.

6. Heart Disease

You may be aware that high blood sugar levels in men can lead to heart disease. But did you know that this can also apply to women?

Although many factors can contribute to heart diseases, such as obesity, smoking, and lack of exercise, high sugar levels in women can also be a major risk factor.

A study published in the journal “Heart” found that women with high levels of blood sugar are more likely to develop heart disease than women with lower levels.

The study found that women with a blood sugar level of over 140 mg/dL were more than twice as likely to develop heart disease as women with a blood sugar level of under 70 mg/dL.

This study provides a new perspective on the link between high sugar levels and heart disease.

7. Stroke

If you're not aware, high blood sugar is a common and often deadly condition where your blood sugar levels are too high.

When this happens, it can cause a range of health problems, including stroke.

In fact, research suggests that up to half of all strokes can be attributed to high blood sugar.

If you have high blood sugar and you're at risk for stroke, it's important to get it under control as soon as possible.

There are a number of ways to do this, and some of the most effective methods include medication, diet plans, and exercise.

Nerve Damage

High blood sugar in women can cause nerve damage, and the longer it goes untreated, the worse the damage. Nerve damage can lead to various symptoms, such as tingling, numbness, and weakness in the extremities.

If left untreated, nerve damage can even lead to permanent disability. If you experience any of these symptoms, be sure to seek medical help as soon as possible.

9. Kidney Failure

If you are a woman and your blood sugar is high, it can also lead to kidney failure.

The kidneys are responsible for filtering the blood and removing waste products from the body.

When blood sugar levels become high, the body produces too much insulin, which signals the kidneys to dump excess glucose into the blood.

This can eventually cause renal damage and even renal failure.

So if you are constantly having high blood sugar levels, make sure to monitor them closely and get medical help as soon as possible if you start experiencing any symptoms such as excessive thirst, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, or nausea.

10. Blurred Vision

If you have high blood sugar, it may cause you to experience blurred vision.

This is a common side-effect of high blood sugar, and it usually happens when your blood sugar levels are too high and your blood vessels are fighting to distribute the sugar to all parts of your body.

When your blood sugar levels are too high, it can cause the vessels in your eyes to swell and result in blurred vision.

When blood sugar levels are high, the level of insulin in the blood is also high, which can lead to problems with blood vessels and the nerves that supply vision with information.

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, it is important to see your doctor: Difficulty seeing in bright light, reduced ability to see at night, blurred vision while driving or during activities that require good vision.

11. Joint Pain

High blood sugar levels can result in inflammation, and when the inflammation persists over time, it can cause damage to the cartilage and joints in your body.

Joint pain is one of the most common symptoms of diabetes and can be quite debilitating.

If you are experiencing joint pain, it is important to speak to your doctor about your symptoms and see if there is anything that he or she can do to help.

12. Fatigue

Nowadays, women are battling more than just the traditional gender roles. They often face additional challenges like high blood sugar, which can cause fatigue.

High blood sugar and fatigue are intimately related and can be caused by fluctuations in your blood sugar levels.

This is likely due to impaired energy production and decreased alertness. If you're experiencing fatigue due to your high blood sugar, make sure you avoid foods that increase blood sugar levels and monitor your blood sugar levels regularly to ensure that they stay within a healthy range.

13. Sore throat

High blood sugar in women can cause a variety of symptoms, one of which is a sore throat.

If you are a woman and your blood sugar levels are soaring, you should be aware that high blood sugar in women can cause sore throats.

This is because high blood sugar can damage your oral tissues, which can lead to inflammation and soreness.

If left untreated, high blood sugar can even lead to gingivitis and other oral problems. If you experience any of these symptoms, be sure to consult a healthcare professional for advice on how to address them.

It's important to consult your health care provider to determine the best course of action for you.

14. Hair Loss

Hair loss is an inevitable side effect of high blood sugar in women.

When blood sugar levels rise too high, it can cause the body to produce lots of ketones, which are toxic to the hair cells.

one of the symptoms of high blood sugar in women is hair loss

These ketones damage the hair follicles, leading to hair loss and baldness. To prevent this from happening, make sure to keep your blood sugar levels under control by following a healthy diet plan and lifestyle and by consulting your doctor if you experience any unusual hair loss symptoms.

15. Sweating

Many women with high blood sugar don’t realize that they are sweating because their sweat is salty.

The body’s response to high blood sugar is to release a lot of sweat to lower blood sugar levels.

Sweating also helps the body rid itself of toxins and can help reduce the symptoms of high blood sugar, such as fatigue, irritability, and hunger.

If you are sweating a lot and have high blood sugar, talk to your doctor about what you can do to manage the condition.

16. Mood swings

If you're experiencing mood swings, it might be because your blood sugar is out of control. Women are especially vulnerable to the effects of high blood sugar because their hormones can affect how the body processes sugar.

When blood sugar levels are high, it can trigger an imbalance in the body's hormone levels, which can lead to mood swings and other symptoms.

Hormonal imbalance can cause blood sugar levels to spike and then plummet, which can wreak havoc on your mood and energy levels.

If you're suffering from mood swings and other symptoms, make sure to get checked out by a doctor and find out what you can do to improve your blood sugar levels.

17. Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is an often uncomfortable, chronic problem that can be caused by a whole host of factors.

One of the most common culprits is high blood sugar, which can cause several complications in the body, including dry mouth.

When blood sugar levels are elevated, it causes the pancreas to release more water, which then rushes to the mouth to quench thirst.

However, because blood sugar levels are also high in women who are pregnant or nursing, this water retention can lead to a drier mouth and even thirstiness.

When your blood sugar levels are high, your body can release too much sugar into your bloodstream.

This sugar quickly turns into glucose, which is the main energy source for your cells. As a result, your body tries to store the glucose as water in your tissues, which can lead to symptoms such as dry mouth.

If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, make sure to see a doctor: difficulty swallowing, excessive thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, and fatigue.

18. Chest Pain

Chest pain is a common symptom of high blood sugar, and it occurs when the blood vessels in your chest become inflamed.

This can be due to a variety of factors, such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

If you experience chest pain and are concerned that it might be caused by high blood sugar, talk to your doctor.

He or she will be able to diagnose the problem and recommend the best course of action for you.

19. Broken Nails

If you're like most women, you take great care of your nails. You use the best nail polish, you paint your nails every week, and you even have a special manicure routine.

one of the symptoms of high blood sugar in women is broken nails

Have you ever thought that the integrity of your nails can easily get compromised due to high sugar levels in your blood?

Now, you should be aware that high blood sugar in women can cause nails to break, and this is very common in women with diabetes.

High blood sugar levels can cause the cells in the blood to release too much calcium, which can cause your nails to become brittle and break easily.

If this happens to your nails, it can also lead to infection and even more complications.

Therefore, it’s important to keep your blood sugar levels under control through diet plans and lifestyle changes so that you don’t experience these nail problems.

20. Headaches

When blood sugar levels become too high, it can cause a wide range of problems, such as headaches, tiredness, and irritability.

It has also been reported that high blood sugar can damage the blood vessels in the brain, causing them to become inflamed and swollen. This, in turn, can lead to headaches, vertigo, and even seizures.

Women are particularly susceptible to developing these complications because their blood sugar levels are often elevated due to different factors, such as hormonal fluctuations.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it might be a good idea to consult your doctor and get checked for high blood sugar levels.

There are various ways to treat and manage high blood sugar levels, and hopefully, by following a few simple steps, you will be able to reduce your risk of developing headaches as a result of high blood sugar.

Conclusion

For various reasons, some of which are still unknown, women are more prone to developing high blood sugar levels.

As a result, they are more likely to experience the major and common symptoms associated with higher sugar levels, such as increased yeast infections of the vaginal and oral cavities, as well as vaginal thrush, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), infections of the urinary tract, fatigue, dry mouth, kidney failure, stroke, blurred vision, etc.
